Background

The EU designates two European Capitals of Culture each year, and in 2032 Næstved – together with the partner municipalities in the Storstrøm Cultural Region – may be awarded the title if there is political agreement to submit an application.

The association Næstved as European Capital of Culture 2032 has therefore commissioned Silverlining Research to analyse the potential economic, social and individual benefits of hosting the title.

The analysis complements the existing feasibility study and aims to strengthen the basis for political decision-making.

Method

The analysis estimates the economic potential based on the expected number of visitors in 2032, their consumption, and derived multiplier effects. The assumptions are data-based and validated in dialogue with local stakeholders in Næstved.

Results

The analysis shows that hosting the title will both create cultural value and generate significant economic activity in Næstved Municipality, while contributing to increased attractiveness, well-being and a stronger sense of community among residents.

The direct economic effects are estimated at DKK 218–241 million in revenue in 2032. Including indirect and induced effects, total revenue is expected to reach DKK 308–340 million. Hosting is also estimated to generate 639–707 additional jobs and DKK 67–74 million in tax revenue in the hosting year.
